Here's a guest post by the author:

Crafty Witchcraft: How to Make Your Own Ouija Board!

Last month, we told you how to brighten up your home with magic-wand toilet paper dispensers, shrunken-head pull tabs for your ceiling fans, and a cheerful cauldron made from the skull of a demented gorilla.  This month, Crafty Witchcraft magazine is happy to bring you some tips and tricks for making your own spirit board, for when you want to speak to the dead but just don’t have time to visit in person.

There are a few important considerations when making a talking board for your own use:

1.The board itself—this is an important choice!  Skp the boring poster paper and consider all your options: wood from a lightning-struck tree, dark obsidian rummaged from ancient temple ruins, or cursed cardboard from an evil factory are all great places to start!  Remember, this will do more than anything else to determine the look, feel, and demon-summoning power of your board.

2.Decorate! If you’re going to speak to the really interesting evil spirits out there, you’re going to need a little something extra.  Consider a black-lace doily edging and pentagrams drawn in goat blood.  A bit of glue and a dash of glitter or ground bone powder from the corpse of a serial killer will really make your board stand out to the dark ghosts of the unseen world.

3.Modernize!  There’s no reason to stick with just the old-fashioned, humdrum letters and numbers.  These days, you’ll want to include a hashtag and an @-sign for more modern communication with the Other Side.  All your witchy friends will see how hip you are when you’re getting messages like this:

Lucifer Morningstar (@TheFallenOne)
GIVE ME YOUR SOUL, WRETCHED MORTAL!

That’s right!  Even fallen angels are hip to social media—shouldn’t you be?

4.Improvise! There’s no reason to stick with a little rectangular board game model.  Consider painting an entire room with the letters, numbers, and other symbols.  Instead of a pointer, use a glass-top table on wheels.  Invite your occult-oriented friends over for a spirit-summoning party, and watch those other witches turn green with envy!

5.Accessorize! Why keep it to a simple, boring old pointer?  Adds some bells and whistles!  Literally. Maybe your spirit wants to express itself through spooky music or flashing lights.  Be creative, and you’ll attract all the coolest ghosts.

We hope today’s article has helped spur a few ideas of your own!  Remember, you’re speaking to the dead—there’s no reason to bore them to death all over again!

Excerpt:

The midday sun had heated the air to an unbearable level, and I understood why the word siesta existed in certain hot countries. In fact, it had turned into one of those days where the only thing you want to do is open the refrigerator door and stand in front of it. I couldn’t take it anymore, so I grabbed a quick bite to eat in the cool of the air-conditioned snack bar and returned to my room, intending to stick a film in the DVD player and chill out until the rays lengthened. The opening credits were rolling when there was a knock on the door. It couldn’t be the maid. When I’d returned, the bed was made and my top had gone to the big dumpster in the sky.
I pressed pause. “Who is it?”
“Manager.”
What? Why? Had someone reported my drunken antics? Had Nessie not cleaned up my mess properly and the maid had complained? Mum would love the excuse that we were forced to go home because I got us thrown out of the hotel.
“Just a minute.” I quickly tied a sarong around my bikini bottoms and opened the door, mentally preparing an apology, and totally unprepared for the sight that met me.
Casually leaning with an elbow against the door jamb and one ankle crossed over the other was a familiar figure. His dark head lifted with a crooked smile.
Our eyes locked, and for one brief moment I was too shocked to speak. A warm tingling radiated out from my chest, down my arms and legs, and my body weakened. What was he doing here?
I managed to find my voice. “Manager, huh?”
“Figured you might not open up if you knew it was me.”
I’ll open anything you ask me to.
Josh’s eyes flicked past my shoulders. “Are you alone?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Can I come in?”
I stepped back on shaky legs, and he squeezed through the gap, brushing my arm with his as he passed. His electric touch gave my nerves another jolt.
He walked over to the balcony access and slid it shut. “Are you going to close the door?”
Hadn’t he just done that? I faltered for a second before realising what I was holding. “Oh. Yeah. Right.” I let go of the handle. The door latch caught, and I leaned back against the fire notice. I needed to sit down before my legs gave way, but the only place to sit was the bed, and as much as I wanted to, I couldn’t go there. He might get the wrong idea. So I went to the dressing table and perched on the edge, hoping it was strong enough to support me. An uncomfortable silence ensued.
Josh stared leisurely through the glass at the view, and I stared at him. The white cotton of his T-shirt was fitted enough to show the contours of his muscular back, and his hands in the pockets of his beige, linen shorts stretched the material tight across his buttocks. My mouth went dry with an overwhelming need to touch him. I couldn’t believe he was here, in my bedroom. If I’d fallen asleep again, and was dreaming it all, I didn’t want to wake up.
Finally he spoke. “You stood me up.”
“I wouldn’t say that.”
“Okay, walked out on me.”
“Yeah.”
“Girls don’t do that.”
I bet they don’t. “Did I dent your pride?”
He swung around, and with two slow, purposeful strides, he was standing in front of me, his nose six inches from my face. “No.” He angled his head. “I understand why you left. It was a shock for me too.”
I struggled to keep my breath even. “It was?”
“You were the last girl I expected to see.”
“Sorry to disappoint.” Why was I smart mouthing him when he’d done nothing to deserve it?
His lips curved into a smile. I’d never noticed his dimples before, but then I’d never been lucky enough to see them this close. “I wasn’t disappointed,” he said.
“Really? You’re not pissed you didn’t get the quick leg-over you were expecting?” Shut up, Amy, before your mouth ruins everything.
His eyes fell to my cleavage. “That’s Jacko, not me.”
The way he was undressing me with his eyes said otherwise.

Chase Winters is one of a kind.

That doesn’t mean he still doesn’t get on my nerves more days than not, but his arrogance is starting to be sexy. Together our bond grows stronger, and so do we.

Just as we hurdle one obstacle, two or three more pop up. Go figure. It isn’t enough that Emma once again hates our guts, now Travis has decided to go all demon-zoid on us. I could hardly blame him though; he had lost the girl of his dreams—again.

After everything that we have endured, I am not the same girl anymore. Not since the day I met Chase. The icing on the cake—there is a  new player in town and he is not human. Hell has decided to pay Spring Valley a visit, and Chase and I are their first stop. Our quiet little town was about to shatter.

Of course there is also our rare bond to factor into all of this, and the pesky last piece. Or maybe it isn’t as pesky as it is combustible.

Excerpt:

Guilt makes my hands shake, so I press them to the car’s window to hold them steady and bow my head. “This is just so hard. I’m trying to be understanding.”

Ethan’s warm hands cover mine, and he whispers in my ear, “It drives me nuts to see you with another guy, even if it’s just something as simple as riding together to play soccer. I know exactly what he’s thinking. I know, because I can’t help but want you more when I see you all sweaty and running your heart out.” He pauses to press his lips to my throat, murmuring, “Mmmm, salty and sweet.”

Tilting my head, I give him access to my neck. I absorb the feel of his hard frame behind me, holding me up and supporting me, even for a few seconds. This isn’t full on intimacy. At least I tell myself that as my body yields to his.

“I miss touching you so much.” His lips slide up my throat and his fingers fold tight around mine, locking our left hands against the cold glass. I swallow hard, my heart hammering when his other hand falls to my hip to press me closer.

Running hard has intensified Ethan’s appealing smell. Or maybe it’s hearing him say how much it bothers him to see me with someone else that amps my attraction. All I know is…I don’t notice the cold air or the thin layer of snow beneath our feet. His heat and intensity seduce me, making me want him so much my insides quiver and my nerves tingle with excitement.

I press my free hand to his jaw, enjoying the feel of his five o’clock shadow against my fingers. Ethan whispers my name and slides his hand up my shirt. My muscles flex as his fingertips trace slowly along my belly until they come to rest over my thrumming heart, and his thumb slides under my bra clasp. Skin to skin. Warmth melding into warmth. “My heart,” he rasps before kissing my jaw and pressing his fingers closer, locking me against him.

New Adult vs. YA
Guest Post by Kristen Zimmer

As a reader, I absolutely love Young Adult – especially YA of the dystopian and sci-fi/fantasy persuasion. But as a writer, I wanted to tell a story set in the real world. Before I even started writing The Gravity Between Us, I knew I also wanted to create characters who had already survived high school (and all the drama that comes with it), and who were just beginning to embark on grown-up adventures, while still having the mindset of teenagers. Sometimes, life seems to throw things at us that force us to grow-up pretty quickly, as is the case with Kendall, who, at just 19, has skyrocketed to fame. She’s got boat loads of money and one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood… I imagined changes of such epic proportion wouldn’t be easy for anyone, let alone someone so young. On the flip side, Payton is a pretty average, American college student who is faced with not only the prospect of uprooting herself from her home and family to move cross-country and be on her own for the first time, but learning how to navigate her changing feelings for her childhood best friend and what that might mean for their relationship.

While writing, I came to one very simple conclusion: the difference between Young Adult and New Adult goes beyond curbing myself from dropping however many f-bombs I may deem fit throughout my book, or even crafting a racy-yet-appropriate “intimate” scene for an under-17 crowd; it’s recognizing that adolescence doesn’t necessarily end once you graduate from high school, that no miraculous chemical reaction occurs in your brain the day you turn eighteen, thus magically transforming you into a fully mature adult. Adulthood takes many years to reach, and everyone gets there at their own pace. I honestly believe that most people learn more about who they are, who they want to be, and life in general between the age of 18 and 22 than they could have handled in their younger teen years. The problem is, YA fiction doesn’t always address the real-life issues that older teens and twentysomethings encounter—moving out of your parents’ house, finding an honest-to-goodness job, paying rent, utilities, student loans, etc... Basically, just learning how to stand on your own two feet without toppling over and hurting yourself.

So, did I nail it? What’s your take on the differences between NA and YA?

Jet Taylor is the quintessential bad boy. A womanizer. A fighter. Dangerous. The type of guy most girls do their best to avoid. But Zoe Janes is no saint herself. In fact, she sees in Jet the perfect opportunity to distract herself from her responsibilities at home and the mistakes that keep her trapped there. He’s gorgeous, likes to party, and is clearly only interested in having fun—just like Zoe. But the more time they spend together the harder it is to stick to her “fun only” mantra. Jet is getting under her skin, making her believe things could actually be different. She knows they’re both trapped by the sins of their past but Jet is starting to make her think freedom might actually be possible. And that makes him the most dangerous boy of all.

Character Flaws

If I think about my favorite characters, whether from books, television shows, or movies, I find that they usually have something in common: I have a soft spot for flawed characters.

Now, that doesn’t mean that I have a thing for jerky guys or bratty girls. But I also find myself pretty much automatically turned off if a character is too perfect. For me, there needs to be a balance. Too many flaws and a character comes across as nasty or hopeless. But no flaws? Chances are I’ll tune right out, assuming the character is a bland goodie-two-shoes. A good balance, on the other hand, makes a character relatable. More interesting. The kind of person I want to root for.

The Notebook is one of my favorite movies of all time. Duh, right? Ryan Gosling is totally swoon-worthy as Noah Calhoun. Noah’s relationship with Allie (played by Rachel McAdams) is pretty much perfect—even though neither character is perfect. Allie is spoiled and really hot-headed. Noah is arrogant and has a temper to match Allie’s. The two fight like crazy (but isn’t it the best when they make up?). I think those flaws make the characters more interesting, more relatable. And I absolutely love how they make each other better. Isn’t that the hallmark of a great love story?

The characters in my new novel, Escape in You, are definitely flawed. Both Jet Taylor and Zoe Janes are hiding things about their pasts. They both deal with a lot of pain in their home lives. And, over the years, both have escaped their pain through alcohol, fighting, partying, and meaningless sex. They’ve hurt people who care about them and hurt themselves even more. But, as their relationship grows, they make each other better. Both become calmer. Less volatile. Stronger. Falling in love makes them realize how much they’ve been missing by hiding from life. My hope is that readers will enjoy watching them change and grow and fall in love—and will appreciate their imperfections just as much as I do.

Cover Reveal: North Pole Reform School by Jaimie Admans

North Pole Reform School by Jaimie Admans
Publication date: November 6th 2013
Genres: Comedy, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:
Mistletoe Bell hates Christmas. So would you if you had a name like hers. Her Christmas-mad parents make the festive season last all year, and with another Christmas looming, Mis doesn’t think she can take any more. After her carelessness causes an accident at school, it seems like things can’t get any worse.

Then she wakes up to find The Ghost of Christmases Ruined in her bedroom.

She is taken to the North Pole, to a reform school run by elves determined to make her love Christmas. Stuck in a misfit group of fellow Christmas-haters with a motley crew of the weird and even weirder, watched over by elves day and night, she doesn’t expect to meet cute and funny Luke, who is hiding a vulnerable side beneath his sarcastic exterior. She doesn’t expect to fall in love with him.

But all is not as it should be at the North Pole. A certain Mr Claus is making the elves’ lives a misery, and pretty soon Mistletoe and Luke are doing more than just learning to like Christmas.

A YA romantic comedy in which Santa is the bad guy, teaching reindeer to fly is on the curriculum, and zombies have a fondness for Christmas music.
